Bottom line: If you haven't read the book, or if you read it too many years ago to remember the subtleties and depth of the characters, you will enjoy this well-done version of Heidi.

She loved the book but was disappointed to the changes the film makers made. Her Grandfather is mean and the revealing of his tender heart is never shown.
Clara is a brat and is also mean and that was not the case in the book either. Also, Grandfather and Heidi had a very integral part in Clara being able to walk again.
Also, this book showed how Heidi learned to turn to God in times of difficulty and this was not portrayed either. If you want to have an amazing experience, read the book again and skip this movie as it deviates too far from the beautiful morals and ideals Johanna Spyri wanted to portray.
Heidi is one of my favorite childhood stories. It is about a little girl who goes to live with her grandfather because her aunt got a job elsewhere.
Later her aunt came back to take Heidi away from her grandfather. Again the aunt got paid quit well to bring HEidi to Frankfurt to become a companion to an older girl.
Heidi became so homesick for the mountains and her grandfather that she became ill. The doctor told the family who Heidi was living with to allow her to return to her grandfather.
One person found this helpful. I give this a 3 star because, when you grew up with Shirley Temple's "Heidi" it doesn't compare.
Even with a two part series, it doesn't capture the magic of the Shirley Temple charisma. I like the original better also because this series is too philosophical and detailed drama which missed the point of the story plot.
The characters also was a better fit in the Shirley Temple version. This is the best Version of Heidi that I've seen. It follows the book as close as any Movie can.

I enjoyed the casting, also. I was amazed that the beautiful Jane Seymour played the part of the housekeeper so well. The actors playing Grandpa, Heidi, both Grandmas and Clara were also very good.
The scenes in "Frankfurt" were also believable. A wonderful movie with all the feels possible. I smiled, laughed, cried and cried some more through out the whole movie.
I've always enjoyed the classic Heidi with Shirley Temple but this one in my opinion is the best version I've seen.
