Dec 18, It is great to see a Noah Baumbach movie that doesn't try my patience for a change with his insufferable characters, as he crafts a delightful story that works really well precisely because it understands that their flaws don't make them at all lovable or cute in their pathetic quirkiness.
Carlos M Super Reviewer. Dec 01, Re-teaming with Frances Ha star and real-life companion Greta Gerwig the two have crafted a script that tells of lonely college freshman, Tracy Lola Kirke , whose world is turned upside down by her adventurous soon-to-be stepsister, Brooke Gerwig.
With Mistress America Baumbach and Gerwig have again tapped into this hip world that only exists in New York City and exploited it for the benefit of relaying universal themes we all consider more as time continues to pass us by.
As I said in my review of While We're Young earlier this year it tends to feel as if Baumbach is repeats himself especially given Gerwig could essentially be playing an extension of her Frances as both of these young women are embarking on their thirties and watching the possibility of realizing their dreams dwindle.
Still, it's as if each of these features that have featured a mix of Ben Stiller and Gerwig are, while similar, still able to present a certain caveat of what makes these similar characters unique to each film.
There is a famous saying that originates from Anton Chekhov that is commonly used in film schools: "show don't tell.
Baumbach has also made a living out of his quick wit and intellectual humor, but unfortunately in "Mistress America," he decided to throw intellect out the window.
There are a few redeeming factors: its Woody Allen-esque use of camera-work, fitting choice of music, and easy to like characters.
Though it doesn't live up to his previous films, "Mistress America" should be watched by Baumbach fans. If you don't like him, you won't like this; and if you haven't seen his other work, I recommend you watch that instead.
I feel every time i watch Greta in movies I'm watching my awkward self in Manhattan. This movie didn't disappoint. Its what I was looking for in a Greta movie - characters that are great human beings with lots of small imperfections, but those imperfections may affect their life in the long run or may not a all!
I've watched Francis Ha so many times. Greta is one who knows how to critique herself and her surrounding characters but make you love them as well for who they are.
I love this movie. Greta Gerwig is irresistible, the writing is incisive, the send-up of the start of college and the literary societies is a quiet delight.
If you like Frances Ha and of course you do , Mistress America is definitely worth a try. All DVDs should have this. The extras were negligible.
I liked Mistress America. There were times throughout the film that were just outright strange and I really wanted to be a fly on the wall while Noah Baumbach was writing, but at the end of the movie I did manage to take away a couple of things, As always, Greta Gerwig delivers a charming performance.
Her character was interesting, for lack of a better word, and I don't think anyone else could have pulled it off. Lola Kirke, despite her characters youthful self-centered egoism or maybe even because of it, gives a great performance as well.
This is one of those movies that If you're the kind of person who people-watches, you'll probably like this. This is one of those movies that has to pick a genre, so it goes with 'comedy' even though it's not exactly funny.
It's amusing sure, and it strives for an honest view of two people's lives, but don't expect a comedy and don't expect a big conclusion.
Greta is a consistently funny, commanding and luminous presence on the screen. It's funny that she is so under the radar, but maybe that is what makes her so effective as an actress.

The dialogue is sharper and the humour more to my taste. In one of the extras a reference is made to the superb Something Wild and I can see that connection too.
Watch this film a few times and you will find yourself quoting the dialogue. Someone wrote that the Greta Gerwig character is self obsessed, which is true, but that is the whole point.
Tracy's observations act as exposition for the character of Brooke, something that was absent from Frances Ha. It may be that Greta Gerwig is a one trick pony - I have not seen her other films - but it's a good trick and one that makes you smile.
If the rights owner thinks that the New York sense of humour doesn't cross the pond well, they should think again. One person found this helpful.
